Short answer: Google retired its built-in chat button on July 31, 2024, so the old blue "Message" link is gone for good. The only messaging left is an owner-added WhatsApp or Text option under Edit profile, Contact, Chat, on verified profiles in select regions. No option showing? Add your phone number so people can text or call.
If you have been hunting for the blue "Message" button on your Google listing and cannot find it, you are not going crazy. It is gone. Google turned it off, and it is not coming back. The good news is that the thing that matters, letting a customer reach you the second they find you, still works. It just works differently now.
Where did the Google Business Profile chat button go?
Google shut it down. According to Google Business Profile Help, the native chat and call-history features stopped working on July 31, 2024. Customers with an active chat were warned on July 15, and old chat records could be pulled out through Google Takeout only until August 30. The chat FAQ feature disappeared. Customers can no longer request a quote through the profile. Even the messaging metric that used to show up in the Performance API, BUSINESS_CONVERSATIONS, was removed.
This was the last of many. Google's chat sat on top of a system called Business Messages, and that system was wound down on the same timeline. Yext reported that Business Messages stopped accepting new messages after July 15, 2024 and fully shut off on July 31. So there is no hidden Google chat product to switch back on. The whole thing is off.
Why does this keep happening? Because Google has tried to build a messaging product over and over, and kept killing each attempt. Aaron Weiche, CEO of the customer-messaging tool Leadferno and co-founder of the review platform GatherUp, watched it happen up close. He describes the old chat as "powered by Google Business Messages, the latest of many messaging solution attempts from Google, but killed off abruptly in the summer of 2024." One day it was there. The next it was not.
A lot of advice online has not caught up. You will still see blog posts telling you to "turn on messaging in the app," or claiming that messaging is a ranking factor, or that Google auto-disables your Message button after 24 hours without a reply. Ignore all of it. Those tips describe a feature that no longer exists.
What replaced Google's native chat?
You bolt on your own chat channel instead. Per Google Business Profile Help, a business with a claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp option or a Text message option under Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat. So the door to a customer is still on your listing. Google just stopped running the room behind it, and now points people to a channel you already own.
Two catches worth knowing before you get excited. First, this is only available in select regions, and it may not appear for every profile, even a verified one. Second, if you add both WhatsApp and text, customers only see the text-message option. So there is no point setting up both and hoping people pick their favorite. Pick the one you will actually answer.
You will need a verified Business Profile for any of this to show up. If you have not gone through verification yet, do that first, because an unverified listing gets none of the contact tools that turn a searcher into a customer.
Turn on text or WhatsApp messaging from your profile
Here is the path, in order:
- Open your Business Profile on Google Search or Maps, or in the Google Business Profile dashboard.
- Select Edit profile.
- Go to the Contact tab.
- Find the Chat section.
- Choose to add a WhatsApp number or a Text message number, enter the number, and save.
That is the whole setup. Once it is live, a searcher who taps chat on your listing gets routed straight to your text thread or your WhatsApp, and the conversation happens in an app you already check.

Don't see the chat option? Add your number instead
If Chat is not in your Contact tab, do not waste an afternoon looking for a hidden setting. It is region-limited, and Google has confirmed the option simply does not appear for some profiles. There is no toggle to force it on.
So make sure the next-best contact route is wide open: your phone number. Go to Edit profile, then Contact, and add or unhide your phone number. A visible number means a customer can tap to call or, from a mobile, tap to text you directly, no chat feature required. For a plumber, a salon, or a takeaway, a phone number that shows on the listing is worth more than any chat button anyway, because most people would rather fire off a quick text or call than start a formal chat.
This is also the moment to check the rest of your listing is pulling its weight. Contact options only help if people are finding you in the first place, so it is worth tightening up your whole Business Profile while you are in there.
Answer before the shop down the road does
Here is the part almost everyone misses. The win was never the button. The win is speed.
Picture two roofers. A homeowner searches "roof repair near me" after a storm, finds both, and texts each one the same question. Roofer A replies in four minutes with "Yes, we can come look tomorrow morning, what is the address?" Roofer B replies six hours later. By then Roofer A is already booked. The homeowner did not pick the cheaper one or the closer one. They picked the one who answered.
The numbers back this up. Forbes columnist Shep Hyken, cited in a Verse.ai roundup of speed-to-lead research, reported that over half of consumers hire the first business that responds to their request, even when it costs more. Half. Not the best-reviewed business, not the cheapest. The fastest.
And a Harvard Business Review study, "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads," found that leads are 60 times more likely to be qualified when you reach them within one hour instead of 24. A message from a Google searcher goes cold faster than a cup of coffee. Answer while they are still standing on your listing, and you keep them. Wait until the evening, and they have already booked the shop down the road.
Set it up so one person answers within minutes
Speed does not happen by accident. It happens because you built for it. Three things make the difference:
- Use a real business texting line, not your personal cell. Route the number to an app the whole team can see, so a message is not stuck on one person's phone when they are up a ladder or off for the weekend.
- Set an instant auto-reply. The first message a customer gets should fire in seconds: "Thanks for reaching out, we have got your message and will reply within the hour." That single line buys you time and tells them a human is coming.
- Name who watches it. Decide the one person, or the two who trade shifts, whose job is to see the message and answer. A channel nobody owns is a channel nobody checks.
Aaron Weiche of Leadferno walks owners through exactly this: enable the Text or WhatsApp option under Edit profile, Contact, Chat, then pair it with a proper business texting setup and instant auto-replies rather than pointing it at a personal mobile number. The channel is the easy part. The system behind it is what wins the customer.
Working with owner-run shops, the same pattern shows up again and again. An owner adds the text option, points it at their own phone, and it works for a week. Then a busy Saturday hits, three texts land while they are serving customers, and by Monday two of those buyers have gone elsewhere. The fix is never a better button. It is a shared inbox, an auto-reply that answers the instant a message lands, and one clear rule about who replies and how fast.
Why do fast replies keep you visible on Google and Maps?
Because a buyer who gets an answer stays, and a buyer who gets silence bounces. When someone finds your listing, taps text or call, and hears back fast, the search is over. They booked you. They never scrolled back to the map to compare the next three options.
That is the quiet link between messaging and being found. Every fast reply is a customer who did not need to keep looking, which means fewer of your hard-won searchers leak out to competitors sitting right beside you in the results. Getting the listing in front of people is the first job, and there is more to that in showing up in "near me" searches and getting more calls from your Google listing. But once they arrive, the reply speed decides whether the search ends with you or with someone else.
None of this needs a marketing degree. Add the contact option Google actually offers now, or your phone number if it does not appear, and build a simple habit of answering fast. Do that and your listing quietly turns more of the people who find you into the people who become customers.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile messaging still available?
The old native chat is not. Google retired its built-in chat and message button on July 31, 2024, and shut down the Business Messages system behind it. What exists now is an owner-added WhatsApp or Text message option under Edit profile, Contact, Chat, and it only appears for verified profiles in select regions.
Why can't I find the chat or message button on my Google listing?
Because Google removed it. If you also cannot find the newer WhatsApp or Text option in your Contact settings, that is normal too, since the replacement is region-limited and does not show for every profile. In that case, add or unhide your phone number so customers can call or text you directly.
What happened to my old Google chat conversations?
They were retired with the feature. Google notified customers with active chats on July 15, 2024, and let businesses download their chat records through Google Takeout until August 30, 2024. After that the records, along with the chat FAQ and the request-a-quote feature, were no longer available.
Do I need a verified profile to add WhatsApp or text messaging?
Yes. Google's documentation says the WhatsApp and Text message options are only for businesses with a claimed and verified Business Profile. If you have not verified yours, do that first, then check the Contact section under Edit profile for the Chat option.
The button was never the point. Speed was. Google took away the blue chat link, but the customer texting you after a storm still hires whoever answers first, so the real work is setting up a channel you check and a reply that lands in minutes. Fonzy keeps the rest of your Business Profile and your wider search presence working in the background, so when that message comes in, you are the shop that gets found and the shop that answers.
